A few months ago I had posted about a coin that I sold on ebay, where the buyer toned the coin artificially and resold it for a profit several weeks later.

Well, I noticed a post by @tropicalbats a few days ago calling attention to an ebay seller who was selling acid dipped Lincoln cents. The seller name sounded familiar, and I realized he had purchased an AU Barber quarter from me in October. I checked his recent sold listings, and sure enough, it appears he sold my AU quarter as a proof Barber quarter last month for a tidy profit. His photos were poor quality, so it's hard to tell if he treated the coin, but I'm 98% certain it was my coin because of a few matching bag marks on the nose, obverse field, and eagle tail feathers.

I suppose there's no rule that says you can't flip an ebay purchase, but I think his listing was pretty deceitful. Here's my original listing and his more recent listing.

I am not sure if it is really the same 1/4 dollar, but the second item is certainly not proof. It looks cleaned to make it look like a proof. Not very ethical in my opinion.

What makes me mad the most is Jack butts like this who ruin perfectly nice coins for their own gain. I hate these people the most because unlike someone who knows doesn't better, these folk do it on purpose.

Many sleazy sellers on ebay. Calling it a proof is clearly a lie. Also Lots of bidiots to feed the sleazbags.

Despite the dramatically different photos, I'm certain this is the same coin based on timing of the sales and the matching marks on the coin.

I think the key to buying on ebay is to avoid shady sellers and to be very good at evaluating and grading from pictures, regardless of how poor they are.
