1988 D Jefferson Nickel - Why Does This Coin Look Plated?

JawTex New Member United States 1 Posts	Posted 12/08/2019 01:44 am I was surprised to see on the reverse at this nickel that the surface metal is wearing away and revealing a yellowish metal hello. That suggests to me that the coin is plated but I didn't think nickels were plated. Can anyone explain? Report this Post to the Staff

With that said, sometimes coins are plated by people after they leave the mint and this adds no value to the coin.
