1988-D-Jefferson-Nickel---Why-Does-This-Coin-Look-Plated?
1988-D-Jefferson-Nickel---Why-Does-This-Coin-Look-Plated? I was surprised to see on the reverse at this nickel that the surface metal is wearing away and revealing a yellowish metal hello. That suggests to me that the coin is plated but I didn't think nickels were plated. Can anyone explain?

@jt, first welcome to CCF. Second, your nickel looks like it has just normal circulation wear and tear. With that said, sometimes coins are plated by people after they leave the mint and this adds no value to the coin.

A natural start of the toning process from it's environment would be my answer.

I just bought a box $100.00 worth of circulated nickels this week, and I found at least ten of those nickles and I say they are road rash. a worth face value
