I wonder if I have the wrong impression on what a double die really is. Is this possible coin slot damage as well?

Well this is a normal die strike with Machine Doubling that altered the right edges of the devices. Not a doubled die. A doubled die shows an enlargement of the devices:

The devices are altered on the outside of the devices. That is what you will find on Machine Doubling:
