I've had this star not dollar bill in a binder for since 2009 (unclrculated and kept in plastic cover), and decided to take a look at the bills I had in the binder, and noticed this. Looks like a finger print on the bill with a slight ink smear (also shown a bit on top of the actual finger print, near the letter "N". Not sure if this will make any sense, but it also feels like a small dent on finger print area. What do you guys think about this? Seems a bit cool!

I think it is from wet ink from the raised lines on George Washington's coat. A note that lay beneath this one you have in the stack before they cut them up. If you take a fingernail and scratch Washington's coat you can feel raised lines.

@TNG, appreciate the response.
Hmm, interesting, the markings seem to be a bit different, being the mark seems to look like lines, and the Washington area looks more like dots.
Also, the area where the mark is at feels like theres a dent, compared to the rest of the bill.
What I was thinking was that once the paper was printed, the someone pressed it with their finger when the bill was still fresh?
I guess we will never know haha.

Somebody will chime in with a more knowledgeable response than my guess I suppose. to CCF There are no dumb honest questions here. Thanks for posting. Just for fun, take out any US bill and scratch the portraits coat. I think the bumps are there for anti-counterfeit purposes.

There is the possibility that the fingerprint may be a wet ink transfer, that happened during the handling of the note after one of the printing processes.

Hey @sel_69l,
Thank you for the reply.
If that is the case, that is pretty cool to see!
I have never seen something like this before, so it is quite interesting and definitely caught my eye!

If that is the case, the note is an error note, albeit a very minor error.

Hey everyone,
I've done a bit more research, and seen that many bills from this year (2001) actually have the same error on the same exact spot.
What it looks like is that Washington's jacket was printed with extra pressure, which is why that spot is shown on the back of the bill.

Very common and not a fingerprint or an error.
