This is my first Morgan dollarI have seen this coin on the net many times, but this is nothing compared with the real thing. It is one of some US coins I have added lately to my collection, and I would like to share with all of you and hear your comments, grading.... Thanks

I would say EF40. The detail looks good but the reasons I'll state for not a AU would be the rim ding on the obverse a noticable scratch on the cheek and the black dot on obverse, could just be the pic. Great 1st Morgan. How many hoops did you have to jump through to get one in Egypt or was relatively easy?

Quote: How many hoops did you have to jump through to get one in Egypt or was relatively easy? I had a great day with the customs, specially that this Morgan came in a package with lincoln, Kennedy, Washington, Jefferson, Franklin...and many US coins plus folders and albums and the 2008 Red Book. I am starting to collect US coins and hope that I would be able to complete any of the series I am trying to collect while I am in Egypt. Sounds like mission impossible, but bytime I found that it is fun and somewhat possible

I see this coin as an AU due to the abundance of luster. New Orleans Morgans are typically found with a weak strike, as noticed by the flatness of the hair by the ear and the eagles breast. It appears that there is a little bit of rub on the cap and arrows and taking the rim bumps @7 o'clock and 10 o'clock and the carbon spot into account, I will call it AU58 details, with a net grade of AU53.

The O mints are a tricky series , this coin could easily be Mint state , and my grade withthe rim bumps is MS-62 .
I do not see the rub on the cheek or brest that I would expect from a circulated coin even a slightly circulated coin .
Just the normal weakness of this date and series and bag marks from the type of storage that these coins were subjected to .

Hi EgCollector, You have received quite a range of opinions so far.
Luster seems complete in the fields and that is usually an indicator of a mint state coin. The cheek scratch, tiny rim nicks, and the black dot would limit the maximum grade to about MS-62. The soft detail near the ear and on the eagle's breast could easily be typical New Orleans strike weakness. I agree with Metalman on these points.
There does appear to be a bit of rub at the highest point of Liberty's cap that might be enough to keep it out of mint state territory. If so, it looks like AU-55 or AU-58 to me.
For a more sharply-struck example of this beautiful design you might keep your eyes open for a San Francisco coin from 1879 through 1882. These are readily available up to grade MS-65 and aren't too expensive. Strikes are almost always strong and luster tends to be outstanding on these dates.
Thanks for sharing!

I'm no expert but this coin has an abundance of lustre. I wouldn't have a problem with paying mint stage prices for this coin. The cap and leaves show minimal wear and the talons still have definition on the reverse. I agree with Metalman's grade of MS62. nlp

G'Day EgCollector I always thought that when grading a coin you don't take in to consideration the edge or rim,the coin has sight wear on the hair so I think it will grade at AU 55 to AU 58 regards

The US grading system will downgrade a coin for rim dings and if they are severe enough, the coin is considered to be damaged.
