I just got a coin, 1909-D $5 Indian. With struck through error. While this error is not much deal, struck through on this coin is over dropped mintmark D. The coin itself is probably AU58 or MS61-MS62 How much this coin is worth? Edited by varord 10/04/2008 11:00 pm

I don't see a dropped mintmark on this coin anywhere.

I think he's looking between the 'E' and the arrow shafts.
Gold coins are very soft and damage easily. Hits are often mistaken for dropped letters. I couldn't be sure of what this is without the coin in hand.

It is a mintmark D between E and arrow. It is clear when in hand, difficult to show on photo

There is no chance that it is a dropped mintmark. The size is all wrong, especially the inside opening of the D. The shape is also not like a D mintmark. I can't tell you what it is as it could be a bump, nick, or anything else that moved the metal into this formation but I can tell you it is not a Dropped D mintmark.
Since the gold is relatively soft, there is a chance that the incuse lettering on another coin acted like a die and hit this one in such a way as to add a D to the surface of the coin. It might be from the word GOD.
Thanks, Bill

To foundinrolls. Still, it is a letter D. Very clear when you look under magnification. D from GOD D is too large to left this. It match the size for mintmark. It was described that dropped mintmark afterward may disattach from the coin and it will left something like this. There are also some lines surrounding D that are obviously mint made. I just do not know how valuable this coin is.

2009 " Red Book" Values. REF: Pg 253 "Normal" 1909D $5.00 Indian Head Half Eagle. 1909D, VF20- $295.00, EF-40 $350.00, AU-50 $385.00, AU-55 $400.00 MS-60 $575.00, MS-63 $3,500.00. This is just ONE source of GENERAL value information regarding your coin. I have no idea as to increased value, "IF" your coin has any errors on it.

I think what happened, dropped mintmark D under the press made incuse print of himself on the coin and partially was flattened over surrounding area under pressure. Later it goes off the coin and left imprint,- incused letter D with surrounding groves.

Hi,
That is not even how a dropped letter error occurs. In any case, This would still not be a dropped D mintmark despite what you think it might be.
Thanks, Bill

Thank you. If dropped mint mark is different from what I know please can you describe?
"There are some quite rare errors known as a dropped mint mark. This occurs when the mint mark cavity fills with grease/dirt then falls out and lands on the opposite die. The next coin is then struck with this foreign matter sitting on the die. The resulting mark is incuse in the coin. It is generally a one time event."
And my coin have incuse mark.
