I purchased a coin on ebay which from my inspection seemed suspect. I reached out to seller who indicated he believes its authentic as he purchased it as part of an old collection.

I sent it in to NGC and... I got note it is "Not Genuine". I sent a note to the seller (coin was purchased over a month ago) who immediately agreed to refund full amount.

Any similar experience?

Zohar,

No I haven't had a similar experience. But I have purchased several Seated coins knowing they were counterfeit ... and paid a commensurate price for them.

This could be something we all could learn from. Any possibility of posting pictures of the coin in the grading section ... and adding the sellers name to the "recommended" list of ebay sellers if the refund processes? Thanks.

Gotta give props to the seller for promptly issuing a refund when shown NGC's findings.

Had to return 3 coins (1911-D $5, 1909-S IHC, 1928 $1) due to questionable authenticity, all verified in hand by a certified wholesale dealer.

That's interesting because I bought a raw 1911-D $5 gold piece on ebay last year for a small premium over bullion (about $300).

Dimensions and weight check out fine, so I know it's gold.

What are other things to look for? The PCGS counterfeit guide only gives general guidelines and it looks good to me.

It's good NGC caught it, but still I wonder about several individuals (middlemen as it were) along the way and who got burned when it went from being a counterfeit to a real coin and back to counterfeit again...

LOL, any of this make sense?
