Wait...when was the second Great Depression?
I think the price of gold started to rise which led Roosevelt to actually ban the holding of gold by private citizens. Can you imagine trying to pull off something like that today?

Gold prices were tied to the US. It was only during the Vietnam war where prices of gold was untied to the US dollars to be able to finance the war.
