I am kind of confused with these terms. I understand it but to me the flat shelf-like MD doesn't look flat, and stands up more. Again, I am not experienced in Doubling at all, so I was just wondering if someone could provide a detailed explanation along with pictures.

I've been stuck on this for over a year and have never really asked about it.

Thank you

The flat shelf like area is where the machine damaged the fresh new devices:

Note the affected area. The contour is removed, the swing damage leaves a flattened area and pushes aside the metal like pushed snow making the not affected area (Bu the MD) pushed upwards.

Because this is caused by the machine, even a doubled die can show Machine Doubling as well:

Machine Doubling is not a doubled die. On a doubled die, the doubling is on the die. Machine Doubling is caused by the machine, so it is not a doubled die. MD is a reduction of the contour of the devices (mostly found on the outside edges and some internal areas of the devices) damaged from machine movement, make a flat shelf like reduction on devices. Thus all coins that are struck with a doubled die, are doubled dies, even if they are MD also. (It is the collectors who determine if they want a doubled die with Machine Doubling them or not. I prefer not to have an example with MD either on doubled dies or RPMs. It just ruins it for me)
Taking images for showing the variety with Machine Doubling on the coin is like showing off images of your new car, with damage on it. (It ruins the affect to me) I know I said that twice, but just wondered if anyone noticed it the first time.

Coop ... You state the "On a doubled die, the doubling is on the die " ! Does that mean that possibly the doubled hub is a result possibly from polishing the die ? As long as that die is used will there be many doubled strikes ? Thanks Rick
