Bought this one off ebay for $15 for my collection because, well, I like it. The S mint mark is the only device unaffected by the struck thorugh. So which is it, grease or a die cap? Looks more like grease to me (that is how it was labeled on ebay) but not totally sure. 197X-S Lincoln Memorial cent - struck through

I'm not sure, but my best guess is grease strike. But I love how the mintmark is super clear as oppose to everything else, I think it adds eye appeal. Awesome purchase!

Looks like grease to me as well. Rims are fully formed so it shouldn't be damage. Great example!

I would have to say grease. The FG makes me guess it is a 1974 S and probably thin date as I don't see the double lines at the top or bottom of the base where a Lincoln sits.

I'm leaning towards a very late stage die cap because of the undulating surface. The S looks to be where the die cap has fallen away.

Thanks for the kind words! Certainly a fun one.
And Petespockets, yes, I also see that surface that looks like a die cap strike, but the rest of it just doesn't have that wavy/blurry look to it where it is struck through. I think that is just some Progressive Indirect Design Transfer showing through.

The rims don't show the usual dished edge where a capped die would make them rounded a bit. But I'm still leaning more towards a struck though a capped die because of the mintmark is not in a target area for a clash, (not that I consider it a clash) but the die cap shows the reverse blockage that is most often seen on a capped die strike.
