I joined the community several months back because I wanted to find out about some near date SBAs. Reading all the post about roll hunting and great finds got me interested. I ordered Whitman folders for all modern US coins and they arrived today. I started to go through my spare change jug (about $500.00 assorted coins) and sorted everything into denominations. I decided to go throught all the Jefferson nickels (least amount of them) and was surprized about the variety I had. The oldest was a 1939. My favorite was a 1944-P ( I believe I have heard the forum refer to them as a War Nickel). If the community would be interested I will keep updating with pictures and finds. Thanks again everyone!

I believe you are off to a great start!

You are correct, the 1944-P Jefferson nickel is a War Nickel. They were minted from 1942 to 1945 an all have the larger mint mark above the Monticello (rather than beside it). Nickel was an important metal for the war effort, so the composition was changed to 56% Copper, 35% Silver, and 9% Manganese (from the normal 75% copper and 25% nickel).

Of course, we love pictures, so go ahead and post them!
