It's Environmental Damage. We see these brown nickels all the time on here.
Probably spent some time buried in the ground.
Don't forget that a nickel is 45% copper to start with.

silverwolf is correct environmental damage coin has seen some time underground most likely I am a detectorist when the ground isn't frozen solid and have dug dozens of nickels exactly like that. Weight is spot on for an average nickel if it were on a copper planchet it would be copper colored (not silverish) around the edges weigh conciderbly less and the dimensions would be smaller cutting off some of the edge. Here is an image of one from heritage auctions for reference. Notice how "In god we trust" is cut off? that's the difference in diameter necessary to be such an error.

That is a dramatic difference in color, but I agree with the others that it is most likely just environmental exposure. Here is a link to the error-ref website with more information on off-metal strikes:

to the CCF!

it's just environmental damage. The weight is correct for an 1987 nickel and the rims are full with no interruption of the coin's intended design.
ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!

You can see the silver color coming back on the higher devices like the rim. Just an homeless coin that was found and spent. Worth it says on the reverse.
