Sorting through my cull pile this morning I found this.

Am I just reading to much into the date or is it the 8 over 7 variety?
Thanks for your help.

the corrosion/wear would erase most of the markers; they're pretty faint even on higher-grade EDS coins.
I'll also mention there's an easy way to eliminate coins even in lower grades:
look for the broken wing tip between OF and AMERICA (see pic below). That is present on every 1858/7 Snow-1 to some degree.
There's also an MPD between the 8 in 1858 and the eagle's breast which is the second most prominent marker.

The more I stare at it the more I think I can see the outline of the 7 ad the doubling on the first 8 and 5 but we all see what we want to see I guess. I don't know about the wing tip the coin is just too worn to see clearly. In this grade I doubt it would carry a premium anyway so I'll be content with my 1858....

That's more the way to look at it. Realistically, die variety collectors pay the premium value for coins they can show off - if the coin is in too low grade to be certain of what you have, it's not going to bring a premium.

Not to upstage expert advice already given--
As a help for anyone searching for this variety, here's the 1858/7 in a lower grade showing wing tip's characteristic weakness. Rick Snow calls this a hub variety present on many dies, including this one*.
In every example I've seen, there's a break in the tip (arrow) roughly at the relief of the field, as well as a weaker, clipped arc in the curvature of the tip's upper edge. Compare to other photos here.
It's very distinctive, and should help you spot a possible even from a mediocre ebay photo. Best of luck to all!

I've been looking for one of these on ebay myself. The break in the wing tip is the indicator I have been looking for. I've seen several possibles, but most of them have been bid up beyond what I would pay. It's kind of cool to have a shot at getting an unusual variety for a bargain.

I had this same experience a while back, when I thought I had an 1885 cc Morgan dollar...the more I looked at it, the more I saw it. (of course, it wasn't there)

I'm glad to know others have the same experiences!
