As I have previously posted, I have been wading through the crap on ebay and buying some Indian Head dates I need. One 1887 listing had what I thought was some mint luster on the reverse, but the picture wasn't too clear. I won the auction for $2.79 plus $2 shipping. I just got the coin today and it is at worst AU-58 with no sign of cleaning and sharply struck. I can't detect any wear at all with my naked eyes, but with a magnifying glass there may be just a hint of wear on the first two feather tips. The coin is a light golden color with just a hint of red. This coin is worth considerably more than my bid. The only problem is it will stand out like a sore thumb in the album with the other circulated examples I have purchased or already owned. With all the horror stories on ebay, some of which I have experienced myself, I thought this was a fortunate turn. Anyone else had this kind of blind luck? Edited by okie-colin 10/09/2008 1:47 pm

Thanks Kurt. I went back and looked at some earlier feedback for this seller and they had sold two other Indians, a 1901 and a 1906 that looked to be uncirculated, but they both went for much more than the one I bought. Just luck? I don't know. I have no present means to photograph my coin, but here is the listing picture. Trust me the coin is much better in hand. Image: 87Indian.jpg58.47 KB

It looks very nice! It must have different lighting obverse/reverse. Btw, 1887 has a nice DDO (below) I can tell by the date position that yours is a different die.

A few years I had my run-in on luck on E-Bay. With the news of the Shallow N varieties of 1870, '71, & '72, coming to light... I found an uncirculated '71 shallow N Snow-5 variety. I used the buy-it-now as soon as I found it ($500). Now that these 3 varieties are listed in the Red Book, it's highly unlikely I would be able to get a deal like that ever again.
