Hi Vince

MS-64 IMO The Reverse is very nice,, Nice natural looking coin,,

But dont take my word alone, there will be an old guy along named Fred,, who cant resist a Morgan thread,, But He Knows much more than me about these coins.

A few points on the coin worry me. First, there's an area on the cheek which looks differently-finished than the rest; I could believe that was from sitting on that side against a felt background or an album for a while. The dot on the upper right corner of that area is of interest, also. Next, the reddish color in the hair is a point of concern, not necessarily of bearing on the grade but as possible post-mint damage. Next, the F in OF on the reverse has things happening I'd like to see at greater magnification (could just be a photographic artifact), as does the mintmark, which seems to be filled.

For the record, Vince, I'm sort of a of error Morgans, and that's what I'm generally looking at when I check out posted pics. Have you a magnifying glass? If so, look around the date for doubling - almost all 1882S VAMs have doubling of one sort or another in the date.

All other things being equal, and assuming the coin has been neither cleaned or damaged, I'd call it MS64 obverse, MS65 reverse for an MS64 grade.
Rest in Peace

Vince, I'm the "old man" to whom Rick ("the boy") refers . He's right: I can't restrain myself when it comes to Morgans.

First, that's one nice looking Morgan! I'll give my usual caveat that it's always difficult to grade from an image; having the coin in hand is always best, but I'll give it a shot. I'm a little concerned (I sound like a dentist) about those digs on Liberty's cheek and above her eye, and the possible blotching on her cheek (might be the 2x2 or just a function of the photography) but otherwise the fields on both sides are mostly clear. I think the dark spot on the reverse is on the plastic film of the 2x2; let us know if it's on the coin. I'm thinking at least MS-64, maybe even -65 and if you catch PCGS on pay day, MS-66 isn't out of the question. Unless those marks on the obverse are worse than the image shows, you're looking at a solid mid- to upper-mid-Mint State.

Do you plan to submit it to a TPG? If it were to come back from one of the four top-tiered TPGs anything less than MS-64, it would be based on something we don't see in the images.

Thanks to all for the helpThis was my first Morgan and my first auction for coins.
The red in the hair I can't under the glass.the spot on the reverse is dirt in the leafes I think? But the luster is nice on the cheek the folder it was in was ms65 But I did not think it would go that High. I bought a lot of 3 at $37.00 Ea. 1882 S, 1879 S and a 1880. I looked at the Red Book and went for it....I hope that posting what I picked them up for is OK

Thanks Vince
Rest in Peace

Vince, that spot on the leaf on the reverse might keep it at MS-64, but otherwise it's a very nice Morgan. While it would be feasible to have the spot removed by Numismatic Conservation Service (NCS; they're the only ones who can "clean" a coin without devaluing it) to raise it to MS-65 or MS-66, this action might be only marginal from a financial aspect (per PCGS Price Guide, from MS-64 @ $60 to MS-65 @ $160 to MS-66 @ $390; big jump however at MS-67 to $1150, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't make the leap).

It's OK to post cost of a coin here if you feel comfortable with it. For the 82-S, it was a fair price for a raw coin. The most important thing is that you are satisfied with the Morgan. I have on more than one occasion paid more (even a LOT more) than fair market value for a coin because I wanted THAT coin.

Thanks Fred, I think I'll take my chances and go to PCGS and have them all graded and hope for the best? I have loved coins for a long time BUT stuck to proof and mint set only because I wasn't sure about the raw coins ( everybody has heard the stories) any way I'll try to post the other pictures a little later......Thanks again Fred and to all!
