Happy New Year everyone!

But a special wish to all coin dealers......please lower your prices!!

The following might sound like the Grinch has gotten hold of me, but it's meant with the utmost sincerity.

It's over 10 years now that the Canadian market has been in a state of depression and it's time to wake up and lower your prices.

2006 is but a thing of the past.

If you really want to sell, then set your prices at what the market will bear.

80% to 100% of trends is laughable right now.

I used to attend every Ontario coin show year after year (from 2000 to about 2010), spending anywhere from $200 to $4000 each show.

Now, if I attend two shows per year, it's a stretch.

Why....because it's the same old, over priced inventory show after show.

It is time to wake up and realize 'the good old day' are gone.

I hope many other collectors will echo my sentiments.

For all I know everything you say is completely true. However, no coin shop could exist financially if they weren't giving people what they want at fair market prices. In other words, if everyone selling hamburgers decided to sell them at a minimum of $100 each, no one would buy hamburgers any more. These coin shops must be selling at fair market prices, otherwise there would be no market! Having said that, I confess to knowing nothing whatsoever about Canadian coin shops, just a little about economics. Supply and demand always works unless government dummies muck it up.

Very few dealers left, the coin show guys are mainly hobbyists and can't be more than a handful of coin shops left in Canada.

What gets me is seeing at the shows I attend, are dealers selling all their items at maybe 10% below current catalogue if not full catalogue, and then someone will come along and want to sell to them and they offer to buy starting at 40% of Trends.
That's quite the haircut I'd say.

Hm...

I don't know what shows you went to, but the ones I go to typically sell for 70% or less of trends, sometimes less than 50% for slow items. Some auctions are getting trends and more for better items.

Some dealers price to sell. In my area of Ottawa, there are 4 viable LCS, so they must have a reasonable sense of the market, and they do discount further if an item is not selling.

Of course, like most LCS they get half their revenue from bullion type items like junk silver.
