This Hadrian denarius came via a genuine seller, who got it from a reputable dealer a couple of years ago. It is 18 x 19mm in dia and approx 3.3 gms.

The Obverse legend reads IMPCAESARTRAIANHADRIANVSAVG, and the reverse PMTRCOSIII. The lettering in the exergue is not clear, but as far as I can make out, it should read LIBPVB. The indistinct "LI" at the start appears to be correct, but the last letter, which should be a "B" is not clear. Is it an improperly formed B?

Thanks for looking,

Hi Jim, looks like a clogged die on the B...

Interestingly when I checked the wildwinds example of RIC-127 var with draped bust the obverse die looks very similar to the OP coin I'm not 100% sure but it very close!....Maybe others will comment.

Do the reverses match up as well?
These two coins could have been struck from a common pair of dies.

In archaeology, die linkage studies are a very useful tool in studying large hoards to determine date order.

The radial cracks on the OP's coin appear to be genuine, because they have well defined, sharp edges. Internal examination inside those cracks has to show evidence of tensile distress to confirm.
Thus far in this thread, I don't think that the OP's coin is cast.

With pressure cast coins, there is also a very close similarity in design detail.

Thank you for the replies. Straying out of the bronze coins into silver is pretty new to me, so maybe I'm being over cautious, but I feel better getting the opinions of those more knowledgeable.

@Palouche Yes Paul, it does indeed look like a very close match, and I'm sure it must be the one.

@january1may A thousand times better than my definitely non-expert eyes!

@sel_69l The reverses don't match exactly, there are a few small differences, so it doesn't look like a matched die pair. On closer examination with a glass, the cracks do appear to have sharp edges.

I had mulled over whether the last letter in the exergue was a "D" or a "B", but I do see now that it would be a "B".

Thanks again,
Jim

Sorry Jim didn't have a chance to answer last night....

Looked at the OP coin again with fresh eyes this morning and I'm sure it's an obverse die match and for sure the reverse isn't!......And it's definitely a 'B'.......BTW nice coin...Paul

Hi Paul, at first I didn't realise that the top and bottom of the last character didn't line up. It is crystal clear in the illustration what the character must be. I can add this one to the collection now.

As only my second venture into silver, I'm pretty happy with it now.

Many thanks,
Jim
