Hi, I've been looking for coin flips (for the first time) over the past two days and I haven't had much luck because they either don't ship to me in New Zealand, the shipping price is a bit much, or I'm unsure about the plastic the brand uses. So I found BCW eventually: they seem to fit my needs but I just don't know if their cardboard flips are safe for long-term storage. Their website says that the plastic is 'crystal clear archival polyester' ( https://www.bcwsupplies.com/coin-pa...2-penny-bulk ), but I'd like an outside opinion: has anyone here used their cardboard flips and deemed them safe for long-term storage? I don't own many coins that are particulary valubale, but I do want to make a good choice about storing them and want to get it right first time... So any thoughts on this would be much appreciated! :) Edited by toomanybees 01/08/2020 10:36 pm

toomanybees: to the CCF !I have $5,000 coins in Mylar / cardboard 2x2 flips. I have used these sort of 2x2's for more than 40 years. The 2x2's are stored in clear, polypropylene or Mylar archival quality non PVC album pages. Link does not work for me. I presume Mylar is the "clear polyester" that the link refers to.

Never heard of them and the Link you gave doesn't work for me either.

to CCF. I use their coin tubes and like them. The only issue I see is if they are clear,I once got some 2x2 that had blurry windows I don't remember what brand. John1

If I'm not mistaking The BCW brand 2x2 is good ( no PVC ). It's where you store the 2x2's that is crucial .If they are stored in a cool dry storage area with no humidity and no drastic temperature changes ,then your coins should remain pristine for the long term . Note , If your going to store your 2x2's back to back together ,then make sure you press those staples down so the don't scratch any other coins . you can use a pair of pliers for this . Usually I recommend U.S. members to purchase a flat crimp staple gun & staples for a perfect flat staple that will not scratch anything . Problem is you probably won't find these in New Zealand . https://www.wizardcoinsupply.com/in...rs&x=49&y=14 . **** Or try Amazon .

Flat clinch staplers are available.
If living in a humid climate, some collectors store their albums in clip lick polyethylene bags, with a couple of small silica gel packets.
Fortunately, not a problem for me.

Thanks for the welcomes! I've read bits of threads here the occasional time but yes this is my first post Just changed the link and it's working now (the problem was that I removed the ' https://www.' so this site didn't recognise it properly) Quote: If your going to store your 2x2's back to back together , then make sure you press those staples down so the don't scratch any other coins . I am going to store them in boxes, so I'll use this advice. I'll have a look around for one of those clinch staplers or just use pliers. Quote: If living in a humid climate, some collectors store their albums in clip lick polyethylene bags, with a couple of small silica gel packets. On the east coast of NZ, it's definetly not humid, so I'm glad I don't have to worry about that part :) Back to the flips though, I'm getting the impression that no one has a problem with BCW. Looks like I'll be getting these unless something big changes in this thread!

Mylar is the trade name for polyester film (PET), so should be safe, BUT,
BCW hard slabs use EVA Foam for the inserts, which contains vinyl acetate, and may also contain formaldehyde. BCW claims that the EVA foam is "safer than PVC" but they do not claim them to be archival safe (subtle but important difference)
Personally I stick to guardhouse or lighthouse brand, and SAFLIPS. I would rather pay more and have peace of mind than save a few dollars and ruin thousands $$$ more.

Extra protection can b given to val;uable coins that are stored in cardboard Mylar 2x2's
Sometimes I will cut some stiff clear plastic poly vinyl acetate (PVA) sheet (recovered from tool toy or food packaging0, to make an insert inside a 2x2. Works best for coins 20mm diameter or less, for example, ancient old or silver coins, such as my avatar coin.
I have also used half of a Saflip inside a standard 2x2, to provide extra protection for larger gold coins, such as Double Eagles. Can still be put into a standard 2x2 album pocket page, to provide the coin with a very high level of physical protection.
I have even used a Saflip heat welded sealed, to provide airtight protection. Can still go into a standard 2x2, and allow full written identification of the coin on the cardboard. Very useful with other than modern machine made coins, where full identification may be essential.

Provided it is properly cleaned, thin sheet PVA used for food packaging is perfectly safe for coins.
What is OK for food packaging is also OK for coin packaging
