Quote:Beautiful IHC, @pepactonius! Fabulous coin! Quote: I think its very cute and a sweet baby coin to survive 156 years. Wonder what it bought when new? Cute coin indeed, the 50 reis little silver piece. I have no data for Portugal, but some idea can be obtained by comparing to French prices at the time. The 50 reis is a silver coin of about the same size and silver content as a contemporary French 20 centimes. In France, 20 centimes would buy you this in the 1860s: about ½ kg of white bread, or half a dozen eggs, or about ½ liter of wine. The daily wage for a worker was 2-3 francs. Contemporary Swedish prices match reasonably well, so assuming that Portuguese prices were on par is not unreasonable (although in Sweden at that time, the wine would be replaced by vodka ). Anyway, here is a piece of contemporary French gold, that would buy you a whole sack of bread. Or quite a lot of wine... France 1864, 10 francs, BB (Strasbourg).
