France 1851, 20 francs, Paris (A)  Ceres, Roman goddess of agriculture, was considered a suitable symbol for the rurally dominated France when a new symbol for the country, not historically associated with the revolution or the 1st republic, was sought for.

British farthing:  Sixpence:  1851 was the year of the Great Exhibition in London's Hyde Park. Held from May to October, in a special building called the Crystal Palace, it showcased the best in Victorian art and technology. The entrance fee was one shilling (higher at weekends and for the first few days), so you'd have needed two of the above sixpences to get in! It's said that 4,500,000 shillings were taken at the turnstiles during the course of the exhibition! The Great Exhibition also had the UK's first pay toilets, which cost one penny, giving rise to the expression, still commonly used in the UK, "I'm going to spend a penny". |

Now its 1850's turn I have a few coins from this year, all of them look 170 years old and are worn!   A Swedish 1/16 Rigsbankdaler coin complete with hole, my oldest Scandinavian coin. |
