Neat German heraldry, @pepactonius! My coin is in far worse condition than that, though...   Russian Empire, Peter II, 1 kopek 1728 (the so-called "Moscow" type). The date runs bottom-to-top on the first pic; the 8 is just visible at the very top (this is a two-year type, the other option is 9). This type is said to be the first known definite appearance of Saint George on Russian coinage (earlier "rider" types, which don't include a dragon, are much less easily identified with St. George), though there's actually a series of Saint George types from 15th century Principality of Moscow. (I hope to get one of those some day.) |

Good to see you @j1m, and always nice to learn more about the iconography. 1728 Duchy of Lorraine, 1 Masson (=12 sous,6 deniers). Note that the rulers of the House of Lorraine also claim the title King of Jerusalem (REX IER obverse and a small cross of Jerusalem in the center reverse) And ... we enter the era of big hair. Era of big hair I love that, but its true, the smaller peruke wigs came in around 1730 - before that it was the age of overdone wiggs back to about 1661.
Its funny as to me, I think big hair I think from the Hippy period to around 1989 with hippie fright wigs, the hair musical - make it a home for the buzzing bees etc, afros, perms, Leo Sayer, long haired rock groups and the frizzy perms and jheri curls of the 80s ending with the late 80s hair metal look.

Lubeck must have been coining a lot in the 1720s/1730s. I think I've got one with an unreadable date somewhere. Another Liard of Lorraine for 1727. A bit easier on the eyes than my corroded 1729, but a more common date   |

And a great write-up on the origins and history of Lorraine, @tdziemia, very interesting  And that LOKKAINE LIAKD, which we discussed elsewhere, surfaces again After some lurking time I'm back, with some French coins from the early 18th century. Here is the first. France 1727, ½ louis d'or, Louis XV, mint Poitiers (G).A ½ louis d'or was valued at 12 livres. After decades of monetary turbulence (more about that in the coming days), the value of money stabilized in 1726 and this stability lasted, with only minor adjustments, until the revolution in 1789.  |
