Venetian gold and a nice thaler to usher in the next century ... not a bad day! (and maybe still some others to hear from?) When I got involved with CCF, I started building my OFEY outward from the 1500s, so my 17th century will be more solid than my 18th (where I think I missed about 40 years  ). Edited by tdziemia

From the other side of the pond for 1700. A groat (four pence) and a halfpenny both of William III The groat has some nice period engraving -- the letters "I A" ... love token? memento mori? Not sure, but it's quite detailed, with crosshatch inside the letters, and such, although harder to see in the photos than up close and personal. The halfpenny with the oddly spaced TER TIVS (sic) and unbarred A's (V punch) is a scarcer variety for the year 1700. There are also varieties where his name is spelled "GVLIEMVS" by mistake, an error later repeated on halfpennies of George II with GEORIVS. And since someone mentioned wire money above, here is a 1700 Kopek of Peter I from Russia (the Cyrillic date is legible on this coin, which is why I like it.) A "huge" 7 mm and 0.3 grams... I tend to attribute this wire kopek to (the last four months of) the year 1699; the date on it (CH = [7]208 [AM]) corresponds to 1699/1700, and the date 1700 also exists in the more standard AΨ version that actually translates to 1700 (the calendar reform is, I believe, traditionally attributed to January 1, 1700). It is, however, the exact same date (not sure if the same KG variety) as @paralyze's "1700" kopek above...   I have no idea how and when did those pics get rotated 90 degrees. They were the correct side up when uploaded. To the best of my knowledge, 7208 is the numerically highest non-mistaken date to have ever been placed on a coin (though admittedly the thousands digit is implied). |
