IIRC, catalogs attribute it to 1700, though of course that might just be a mindless conversion of the date. I think I've seen it proposed somewhere that the CH and AΨ dates were used in parallel at different mints and/or workshops. IIRC, those two dates are not significantly scarcer than the surrounding years (in particular, to the best of my knowledge, CH is more common than C3 = [7]207 AM = 1698/99 AD), but of course 1/3 of the minting time does not necessarily mean 1/3 of the mintage. |

This is one of my favorite coins. It's (most likely) a 1697 Shilling, a death token - presumably intended to honor someone who passed away, such as a loved one/family member or a friend. The engraving is very well done and this must have taken a good deal of time to pull off. I am not sure if it is possible to date it to a certain time period but the engraving looks 18th c. to me (based on similar examples with dates) which would be commensurate with the wear on the underlying host coin. Paralyse - I would say by the urn and the willow - very late 18th century or early 19th (c.1780 - 1820). If it was earlier it would likely be a cherub or a deaths head (Skull) My 1697 includes a halfcrown from a Branch mint of England   1697 Exeter, England Halfcrown - Wiiliam III This coin was part of William III's great recoinage of 1696 - 1700 in which mountains of Elizabethan and early Stuart hammered and clipped silver coins were replaced by Fresh ones like this. This coin perplexes me as the harp obverse was only used on early 1696 coins and the date is worn yet the date on the side (Regnal year 9 - Nono) suggests 1697. I thought it was fake, but its real, just a poorly struck provincial coin and obviously very worn (aVG - Good+). Still a great coin in my opinion and the first of 6, 17th century halfcrowns I have to show you all! |

For 1696 we have another Williamite Half crown. This is a tower mint one and much higher quality.   Kingdom of England, 1696 Half crown, small harp obverse - VG condition. Of course being that Sir Isaac Newton, the Sheldon Cooper of his time was in charge of minting them. This coin is pretty worn (The market for Williamite coins in the sub $100 category is limited) - but I love it. That is me until 1688 and 1687! Edited by Princetane
