This Lithuanian coin is a little larger--my Half Groschen dated 1558 AD:   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

Thanks all, for the comments. I've built my Poland OFEY collection considerably since the last edition of How Far Back. 1550s can get a bit monotonous with the halfgroats, but I've got a few denars coming up. 1558 Lithuanian halfgroat like @spence, but without the nice patina:   Edited by tdziemia

Hungary 1 Denar 1557:  I will have to 'bow out' after this unless I can find some English hammered coins that can be exactly dated by their mintmarks! |

Here is a another Drier from the German Electorate of Brandenburg. It is dated as 1556 AD:   "If you climb a good tree, you get a push."

Ironically enough, my 1556 coin is Polish - though at least it's not a halfgroat... (Somehow it feels like last week that we talked about it in the Fifth Edition.)   Poland, Sigismund II, free city of Danzig (Gdansk), denar, (15)56. This type was minted with minimal (if any) differences, aside from the date, across multiple decades and multiple nominal rulers. I forgot how Numista classifies them, but I recall I found it weird. (It wasn't all on one page.) IIRC for a while Numista didn't have this date at all. Yet again I never got around to making better pics. (The tiny and dark coin is not very conductive to being photographed, but I surely could have done better than that.) I vaguely recall that I had multiple coins dated in the mid-1550s, but the only ones I have photos of are this one and a Lithuanian denar with a probably-illegible date that I used to read as 1555. I think there might have been [EDIT: definitely was] an Indian coin from 1554. Numista tells me I have a Hungarian denar from 1557; if I bothered to check yesterday I could have looked for it. From (just outside the nominal gates of) the Aurora coin fair, ~$5 (I forgot the exact price), sometime late 2016 (I forgot the exact date), at the same place and probably from the same seller as the 1616 ternar. Silly fun fact: I met that seller at the Taganka open-air coin market earlier today (he recognized me from the ternar sale, but I forgot to ask his name). |

For 1555 I have the next earlier date of @j1m's coin, this denar from Gdansk. And indeed, that same design was issued through four reigns in the 1500s, and the 1573 interregnum (my coin for 1573). They were dated between 1546-1599, though not all years.   |

Lovely coins from all corners of Europe! France 1553, teston, Henry II, Paris (A).  One of the earliest French milled coins. It was Henry II who introduced milled coinage in 1551. Then a new mechanical mint in Paris was opened, called Monnaie du Moulin (The Milled Mint), with water-driven sheet rolling and cutting, and screw presses. There the testons were minted until Henry's death 1559. The conservative Paris Mint Board was not fond of the invention, and after Henry's death they intervened and re-introduced hammering. After that, mechanical coining was restricted to medals and small denomination copper issues. It was not until 1640 that Louis XIII mandated that milled coining should be used for all coins with portraits. |
