Back to holed coins.

Low value coins in British East Africa also had holes in them for natives to carry around on strings or around their necks

British East Africa included modern day Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, and even possibly British Somaliland (Somaliland Republic)

Originally these coins were aluminium, but bronze was adopted by the 1920s. These were not very durable and you can see how worn they are.

After Independence, Tanzania kept bronze, but Kenyan 5c and 10c coins were made in more durable brass. The holes disappeared and Swahili words came so to a Native this coin was actually a "Senti Kumi" rather than Ten Cents.

Tomorrow I will show a 5 cent coin.

Love the Walkers and those Steel cents guys - I had a few of the war cents (Are they zinc or steel, I get mixed up) but they were nothing like those!

Here is a Fijian Florin from 1943, another American coin for you.

It was minted in San Francisco and thus was 90% silver instead of 50%. the coin is in fairly good nick too.

These photos are over exposed, all my coins back to 1940 have this issue, when I do photos for 1930s coins I will try and alleviate this problem.

My final 43 coin - another Australian one
Even though there were San Francisco minted coins in 1942 - 44 for Australia, this is not one of them, a locally minted one.

Australia minted most of its own coins, only occasionally using foreign mints.
