Those Rhodesian coins are beautiful - it is a sad indictment I don't have any (Just a nasty 1 cent coin of Rhodesia from 1970 something!)

George Kruger Grey designed them too and his inspiration for the Maori motifs on the New Zealand series was based on those coins. The spears on 3d and that 6d inspired the war clubs (Waihaka) on our 3d coin.

This is a 1935 shilling of Fiji and one of my faves too going with the Florin yesterday and several coins I will show tomorrow as 1934 was the first year of Fijian coinage.

This design by Morlon was introduced in 1931 and on the 1-franc coin it lasted until 1959, with a change of metal in 1941 and an interruption during 1942-4. 1935 is the key date for the Morlon aluminium-bronze franc, with a mintage figure of 1,166,038. I picked this one up in a British dealer's junk tray in the 1980s for 5p or 10p. Shame about the pale area on the obverse - perhaps someone tried to clean it at some stage, or maybe a piece of crud that had been stuck to it for years may have fallen off, exposing the cleaner metal beneath!

I really love that Streamlined Moderne eagle on the Connecticut half.
Even though they are numerous, some of those halves are beautiful designs, others I find a bit plain like the Spanish trail.

I now see why they were issued, as Paralyse said - no gold and a general upgrade of American coin designs every generation at most. I know the Half craze extended from the 1892 Columbian to the last Booker T Washington half in 1951 - but peaked in that 1934 - 1938 period.

I used to collect American in my earlier collecting days (Late 90s) when I had about 20 Morgans, 10 Walkers, 5 Kennedys and Franklins, various quarters and some better pieces like a 1921 Peace high relief.

I have been slow this time, as Americans are more expensive and there are heaps of Chinese fakes around now. In 1997, a Morgan cost $15, now its at least $45. Most of my Morgans were not MS (I had two 1882S and 1884S), but were between F15 and AU50, Mostly VF30 - XF45.

1935 Irish Free State Penny

Ireland was in the Empire until 1937 and before 1939 coins of it had the horizontal date and writing around the edge "Saorstat Eireann" - Free State ireland.

Even though it became Eire in Sep 1937, the 1937 coins showed the old inscription and no 1938 coins were issed, so the first Eire coins are dated 1939.
