Quote: "Forgive me for being stupid, but what are the major differences between the prototype and the regular one? They do not jump out for me, and I have a regular 1971 in front of me." You are asking a wonderful question! I will thus be delighted to post a link in this thread to the PCGS article on the prototypes, when it appears within a few weeks. Thanks for your interest! David

Thanks, @prototype, and congratulations for having such a coin. I would not have even noticed it. But here in the frozen north our eyes are sometimes frozen shut.

Thank you very much for your very kind comment! I'm glad that you enjoyed seeing this treasure that I not so innocently slipped into this message board! To see, I might add, what would happen (grin)! Stay warm up there! David

I'm confused. Is this silver or isn't it? In the original post, it "might even be silver", then further down the page PCGS did "metalological testing on the silver planchet itself". They gave it an SP-67 grade but didn't reveal the results of the metal test?

And, yes, the planchet is 40% silver (give or take). However, I have not as yet seen the figures for the metallic composition of the planchet.

I think that an important reason for today's topic was to share my personal sense of wonder at this remarkable artifact. It is not often that one sees what is essentially a hand-made coin, much less one of the three-earliest known examples of the 728,000,000 or so coins which followed in the Eisenhower dollar series. Enjoy! David

It's cool as such but I would give you only a dollar for it :) we discussed this before on here having something cool and it being worth a lot really depends on the buyer and seller. I think Ike's are some of the ugliest coins followed by the Ben Franklin 50 cent piece. Ugly coins that I have no interest in owning. All in all having one is cool but I'll pass.

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". Additionally, it is the middle of winter so everything is cool!

Thank you, oriole, for asking an honest, thoughtful question, as well a respectful response to the answer given you. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for some of the other responses. Ignorance is to blame for those who do not understand how significant this prototype is. It's an actual "hybrid" of a business strike and proof issue- a true prototype in every sense of the word.
Thanks for sharing with us, David. I am in awe.

Quote: Oh, man, Jbuck is going to go crazy! Indeed! Amazing and impressive piece. Yeah, I got the joke, but I had a head start reading the Post An Ike (Eisenhower Dollar) reply first. Also, us Ike collectors can be... odd at times. Quote: I will thus be delighted to post a link in this thread to the PCGS article on the prototypes, when it appears within a few weeks.

Thank you for your fine posts, Darth and jbuck! I feel like starting my post over with "A guy walks into a bar with an 1804 dollar ..." Or perhaps my "Avatar" might have something to do with this. David
