I will post another picture of it. It is actually a vary thin layer missing. A stain would not have a edge around the missing piece and with paint in would be raised and I would be able to scrape it off. The one picture shows the peal starting or stopping at Lincoln's cheek.

IMO, the surface of the area in question just looks too smooth for a lamination and the border has smooth curves- a lamination should have a jagged or linear border and a rough area underneath. The outline has more of a liquid appearance and I see other spots next to the mint mark and following the rim up to 3 o'clock. There appears to be some greenish residue in these areas, perhaps something was on the coin and then later removed.

I did a bit of cleaning with soap and water,toothbrush and I'm sure your right biokemist. Some type of corrosive chemical must have done a number on it. Most likely good old soda pop. My guess. Thanks for the input.
