Any help is welcomed and appreciated. Coin is in 2x2. Same one its been in for probably a decade. The brown looking thing between the N and the A on the obverse is not on the coin. Coin is said to be unmolested and this came from a credible and reputable person. Coin is a pretty bright yellow as it does not appear to be any toning. I am not good at taking pics of yellow, silver or shiny coins. I did my best. Thank you in advance. Edited by yellow88 01/12/2020 02:26 am

If you haven't looked on CoinArchives yet, there are examples of every grade from AU55 to MS64 out there. Though I'm not sure that helps because it seems to me to be a a group of inconsistently graded coins (or this might reflect my inexperience).
Clearly the presence of a fair amount of contact marks (even rim hits) does not appear to rule out getting into the MS range. You can even find a coin with some fairly deep scratches (separate from adjustment marks) that earned an MS61 and fetched $700.
I am thinking high AU range, maybe low MS, but regardless, I think you have a coin with good eye appeal, as there are no adjustment marks, the rim is quite good compared to other examples I see out there, and the few larger marks you have obverse are off the portrait, and the reverse is problem free.

What help do you want? It really makes it easier for use if you ask (a) specific question(s). I see a genuine 40 Franc gold coin with a moderate amount of circulation wear.

I'd say AU-58. Very attractive.

Thank you all. I appreciate it.
Thank you for your post oriale and bringing that to my attention. I made a false assumption that by posting in this specific forum that I was automatically seeking grading opinions on the coin.
My mistake and my apologies. I'll be more clear next time. :-)

InianGoldEagle thank you for the input.
How much you think the coin is worth? Basically the value of the gold?

I would also say EF-45. There would be some premium above melt value (which today is around $600), maybe add $150-200 to that. If indeed it would grade AU-58, add another $500, that should give you the price range.
In any event, it is a very nice coin.

EF - Quite a lot of wear on his hair and the wreath. The ding at N and A or blemish would cost it.
I don't value gold so can not offer a price opinion.
Despite all my gloom - you have a beautiful and very historic gold coin. I see this piece and think of Cosette's mother having her two front teeth pulled out for two of these "Napoleons", and Tennardier wanting to get his greedy hands on it!
A great Les Miserables coin.

Thanks Princetane for the awesome post.
You certainly have a way with words because you really painted some amazing and vivid imagery towards the end.
Good stuff!
