Was not certain with sellers pics but in hand my suspicions were correct. Two varieties cherrypicked this week not bad. While grading this coin can you identify my motivation for buying? It's there, just take a moment.   |

I think I see an MPD but without closeups I don't think I can tell if it's Snow-2. Nice find! Well done!

Only thing I see is the possibility of a 7 under the 8. Otherwise it's a VG IHC. Nice otherwise. I don't know if this is what I would call a Cherry Pick, again the pictures aren't great, but the eye appeal isn't there for me. |

Well the last coin you posted is not VG, but your pictures is pretty bad. What I see is VG10/F12. This coin was graded VG  |

Nice 1869 hfj wouldn't kick that one on the porch. Yes wolf, die chip under chin the high grade example is on the bay, seller describes it as "goiter neck variety". Never heard of a thyroid gland Snow # maybe someone has? What drew me to this coin was its the second example raw I have held in hand and the MS example on ebay makes 3. Looked at over 150 1878's in last 2 1/2 months and the first dimpled one I held was a details recolored VGish passed on it but definitely studied that chip wondering what it is. Neat little mole doubt it has any premium but since I was needing a F12 anyway thought why not. |

@Luv,
Do you have a better picture? Could be the lighting or just soft focus but the 1878 may look better than is showing. The date is very strong so the softness I see maybe due to soft focus.

Not sure on the variety, but I think the 1878 is a solid F-12. The surfaces look great!  |

I also graded it as a solid F-12 I have encountered some difficulty locating a no frills fine example without problems. Many G's and VG's are availible online or at the shops I frequent but about half of those are cleaned, worn, or beat up or just ugly. Little fanfare for this date until you start searching for one and a "hmmm" moment arrives and you realize its scarcity. I ran into the same situation locating a nice 1921 Buffalo - in that its not a particularly scarce coin pop wise but finding it takes patience. My votes in for the 1878 as quirky coin of the series. Oh the acorn below the chin, does anyone else have any knowledge of this chip/irregularity?
