I picked up this roll of pennies the other day at the local station & on the outside of the roll someone had written "(NEW,KEEP)".. when I opened them I found mostly all 2009 pennies with the exception of just a few but all are in excellent condition even the 1985 one. my question is, is there a reason for someone to keep these certain dates? I know there's a bunch of 2009 errors or so that's what I've read. I figured the fastest & most accurate way to find out was to ask you guys. sorry if this isn't exactly the right place to post but I didnt know where else to go.

Well there was quite a few of the 2009 cents made but, they are still unique. Finally after a century they ended up changing the Lincoln cents to 4 different varieties for that year.

They are unique, that's why. I personally don't keep onto them but others do.

Well like any coin I'm sure you can find some error listings with a little bit of research: http://www.varietyvista.com/

But as far as I know, no grand errors you should look out for.

As was said, the reason people kept 2009s is the same reason they keep 1976 quarters - they're different. There is one fairly significant DDR that I know of on these coins, which is Lincoln's finger holding a book on the formative years (or whatever it's called) reverse design. Worth at least checking variety vista to see if you have any known DDR varieties.

Most likely the original owner just had them saved for their condition.

2009 is a hot spot for doubled dies. IIRC, there are over 100 known DDRs for LP-2 (Formative years, Lincoln on the Log) mostly showing as extra/doubled fingers on the book. I personally have never found one (although I only looked for the major ones - a full extra thumb) although I haven't searched most of my ~1,000 which are still in their original bank rolls.

I believe there are others - doubled log ends on his cabin, doubled windows on the other two, etc. Certainly keep the Presidency ones - those are especially scarce as the mintage is less than half of any of the other designs.

On the 2009-P LP2 there were a lot of doubled dies on both sides on these. I got a stash of someones collection that was a filled plastic beer bottle of cents. It took him years to fill the huge bottle. So there were many years of BU coins in this bottle. I saved the AU/BU coins to search again sometime in the future when new thing maybe discovered since then. I've not check back on them yet. I put them in tubes years ago. Someday? So someone may have been saving them and someone else cashed them in. (I always figured, if they were nicest coins, I'd save them for another look years later) Rest, I put back to work.

right on thanks everyone. I knew about the double fingers on the book and the log ends on the cabin to the left of the window. I'm tryin to scratch an itch with these doubled dies. not exactly sure what I'm looking for but ill know it when I see it. ill just neatly put these coins back in to my vault of misc. coins that will never be touched (in my lifetime anyways). its mainly for generations of my damily down the road to benefit from, given money is still a thing when that time comes lol...
once again thnx everyone
