The "soft" N is generally called the "Shallow N" die and is, with the single exception of 1877, only found on Indians dated 1872 or earlier. The later version, adopted in 1873 and used until the end of the series, is called the "Bold N" die, and the difference is clear when you've seen both types. It is unclear why they re-used the Shallow style in 1877 - perhaps, planning on a small mintage, they felt they could squeeze a little more life out of one remaining die (there is only one reverse die known for 1877}.
