Hello everybody, my first post here. I've some old and not so old coins, not really a collection. One coin with bizar writing caught my attention. I've found similar coins on the internet and learnd it is a nepalese coin but never managed to fint the exact one, always a letter a symbol or a digit different. Any help will be welcomes Edited by Sap 10/22/2008 03:28 am

I believe this is a Nepal Rupee, dated 2034 (1977) Mintage 20M, --struck in Canberra, Australia. Krause # KM828a

Hi KurtS, well, my scans are not so good and I've just borrowed a camera with decent macro so I'll replays the pictures soon. Anyway on the trident side down to the right across the symbol that looks like 20 in my coin there is somthing that looks like 3 and on your picture it's more like a nine, and I've found more differences but without uploading a decent picture I can't point to it.
DagonX, is there a picture that I can look at ?
Thanks guys.
BTW I just reconfigured the disply, these are not my new photos yet.

Meaning I would like to see KurtS's photo if possible and DagonX's photo is not identical to my coin in my eyes.
I'll get back with better photos to shoe the differences.

Shegel, I just went by my Krause catalog to identify and translate the date. That's all the info I have. I also think your coin is cupro-nickel.

Hi sheqel. Your coin is as KurtS states, a 1 rupee dated 1977. These coins were issued form 1976 to 1980; Example on CoinArchives for this type is the same date as yours.

Thanks Sap, thanks KurtS, looks like you got it right, as far as I can zoom in with no distortions it looks identical.
Thanks guys.
BTW, how did you decipher the writing ? or at least the numerals ?

This is the area of the coin that shows the date: Nepali numerals are notoriously flexible in form; this is because there have been half a dozen different writing systems in use in Tibet, and each has their own slightly different form and shape of the numerals. On this coin, the numerals are (from left to right) 2034. This is the date in the Hindu Vikramasamvat calendar, which is 57 years "ahead" of the AD calendar; VS 2034 = AD 1977.
