One thing to remember, the 1944 Lincoln Cent has master die doubling on the 44. This is what you maybe seeing.

The little thing on the diagonal of the 4 is a die chip. BJ is also correct in that the bottom of the 4 digits have doubled serifs because of master die doubling - all 1944 cents are like this to some degree.
