Looks like a huge gouge or other extreme damage to me. Doubtful it left the mint looking like this. Lamination errors look similar, but usually don't appear as deep damage as this coin presents. I'm 99% sure it's just PMD.

The letters N of IN and the Y of Liberty were still visible and not damaged.

It is not a gouge or a damage, I agree with john. I think it could be a struck thru a lamination fragment, will wait for coop.
In the mean time it won't hurt your coin to soak it ina pure Acetone for a few hours.

Correct guys. It is a lamination. Nice to have the weight as well, as it shows a reducetion. If it were adamaged coin, (altered coin) the weight would be normal.

Looks like a lamination to me also. Especially since there is no visible "punch" type damage to the reverse of the coin. Weight is helpful but isn't 3.0 g within mint tolerances and therefore a possible weight for all three choices? (Lam, Struck through or a hit type of PSD)
