I got this one for almost nothing. Do you think AU-50 would be fair?

Thanks

If You don't mind. What do you think keeps this coin from reaching MS?

In my opinion, 1938 is by far the worst year for the weak strike for the KGVI 5c serie ; I've seen a ms-64 whit less details than your exemple, and high grade exemple are often weakly struck.

I think I see tiny trace of wear on the beaver so I would go for Au-50/55.

A high powered loupe (10x), with the coin examined in hand, is needed to confirm, either way, to MS or not.
That is what TPGrader would do.
If the surface is undisturbed on the high points of the design, both sides, then it is fair to say that it would be a weak strike.
Really need micrographs (not pictures) on screen for us to say so either way.

With these pictures I would say
AU-50 to 55 range.

A cheat's approach would be to submit it for TPGrading, so that they can examine it in the standard way that we can't.
