SPP - how many of those 1980-81's did you actually find yourself in bags, rolls or change, and how many were bought from dealers, collectors ?
How many split planchets are known? How many 1981 ?
Of 37.8 million+ people in Canada, how many of you have found a split planchet coin in the wild ?
People, reread my post. I did not say it was a rare coin; I said a rare FIND !! I have 17 rolls of red 1980 & 1981 cents - never found a split planchet.
I would get $10 of cents and $10 of nickels from the bank every 2 weeks for over 10 years, 1972-84ish. At 20 times a year, that's 20,000+ cents, about 1/4 million over 12 yrs. Also had a corner store from 1984-90, exchanging rolls several times a week - never found a split planchet.
-Went to several coin shows way back - never saw a split planchet.
-Read CCN for years - never read about split planchets.
-Scanned
ebay intensively for years 2000-10 (40 or more hours a week) - never saw a split planchet for sale.
I guess marking 20 examples was too low for an estimate, so let's take, oh, I don't know, 86 examples.
IF there were
86 1981 split planchets minted, and you had all 1.2 billion coins in front of you, you would find 1 split planchet every 14,063,587 coins.
- Odds of winning 6/49 - 13,983,816.
I bought many junk lots in early 2000's. I had
380 1859 cents (out of 8,150,000) which had come from $1 to $6 per coin
ebay lots . Out of those 380 coins, I found 4 x 9/8, 2 x DP9#2, a DP9#3, a DP9#4, and a DP#5.
I have found a 1955 NSF cent (56.4 million), 2 1985 pt.5 (771 million), 1 1953 5 cent mule (56.4 million), and 7 1964 EWL 5 cents (78 million), but never found a split planchet 1981 cents (1.2 billion).
I've never found a split planchet cent of any kind. Thus, any split planchet found in circulation (or rolled) IS A RARE
FIND !!
