Is anybody familiar with this coin, I bought it as Persian but thought it was Egyptian? Also what resources are best for pricing these coins? I have several gold coins, from several countries but it really feels like gold coins are a worse investment than silver, possibly because people don't destroy enough off them?

Egyptian 5 Qirsh 1293 yr 18. NGC has a world coin price guide I use a lot. They say their values are based on Krause. Sure beats spending $60 on a catalog. https://www.NGCcoin.com/price-guide...duid-1241514That must be tiny. .875 fine gold and only $18 in melt. Cool coin though. I love Egyptian coins.

Quote: it really feels like gold coins are a worse investment than silver, I don't invest in coins. I collect them. That ensures I'm never disappointed by whether they appreciate or not. Stocks are a much surer bet over the long run.

@Lancek Thanks! You are right it is a very small coin, in the midwest though it is possible to get very, sometimes better than melt, prices for coins because of *** Political Commentary Removed by the Staff *** @tdziemia you are probably right, however, people in monastic orders sworn to poverty are rarely interested in finding, and selling coins to coin collectors at a loss for the good that it does their soul. Oddly neither am I.

Die crack or scratch on obverse (toughra) side of coin. Can't quite make my mind which, due to the lighting angle.

Keep in mind that this is a very highly magnified image that was originally a 25 meg pic reduced to a 170KB. That having been said I am not entirely sure either. However, either end of the marking does not seem to get shallower. I am inclined to think that this one is a die break.

In hand examination with very high magnification should help to decide if die break or scratch on the coin.

Under 8x it appears to be a die break.

I totally realize it has value way over melt. As indicated by the price guide I linked. I'd pay $100+ for one in that grade. I was just commenting on the melt value to make a comparison in size. I think of the British 1/2 Sov as a small gold coin. And that has a current melt of $187. So yours has to be around a tenth the size/weight of that.
