I found this odd looking nickel today could someone give me some idea if it is an error or machine damaged.

So anyhow my camera is lousy at taking photos I got someone else to take another photo I was trying to show the over lapping of the I onto the N in United and the ridge that is actually underneath the wording as well.

to CCF. Photos are a bit rough,but the 1980's era they look kinda mushy. And your coin also looks like a late die state aka a worn die. Wait for a few pros to chime in.

Not an error.
Just a combination of Die Deterioration and circulation wear.

It was struck through a set of VLDS die state when this coin was struck. Spendable, unless you want to save it as an educational aid to show to another new collector.
