Lack Of Knowledge Here . Need some help on this one...I've seen a couple of these and want to know what you call this and if you don't mind, what causes this ? Just to state the obvious.....The "L" is almost missing in Liberty (after taking pics, it also looks like the B is doubled) Anyway....also the "In God" is very weak. The reverse is.....well just in case you asked to see it....I'm catching on
It's die wear, plain and simple. This 'hump' inside the rim area that obliterates a lot of the devices it runs through is commonly exhibited on coins struck with dies in their last stage of life.
There were a lot of problems with the planchets and the dies between 1983 and 1988 because the mint didn't think through the whole zinc cent thing and didn't get it right at first.
