Lack Of Knowledge Here . Need some help on this one...I've seen a couple of these and want to know what you call this and if you don't mind, what causes this ?
Just to state the obvious.....The "L" is almost missing in Liberty (after taking pics, it also looks like the B is doubled) Anyway....also the "In God" is very weak. The reverse is.....well just in case you asked to see it....I'm catching on

Look's like a trick coin to me, like hollowed out and a plug inserted. Why would there be that separation at the rim?

The die has been over polished which created the weakness in LIBERTY.

Umm...no.

It's die wear, plain and simple. This 'hump' inside the rim area that obliterates a lot of the devices it runs through is commonly exhibited on coins struck with dies in their last stage of life.

Chuck:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this seems to be more prevalent on LMC's from 1983 thru 1988 than any other time.

Did the US Mint have a problem back then with dies?

I also agree with the worn die scenario.

There were a lot of problems with the planchets and the dies between 1983 and 1988 because the mint didn't think through the whole zinc cent thing and didn't get it right at first.
