A mintmark is incuse on the die. Raised on the coins. When it is the same level as the field it is usually not a mintmark punch but often a stain or a contact mark.
There were a few 1956-D RPMs that was not part of the mintmark: Strange year for this. There is a 1959-D RPM that also fits into this category: Also a 1958-D: But most of the time the RPMs are on the mintmarks.
