I have this 1847 Braided Hair Large Cent that someone (not me) scratched part of the 4 off to look like a 1. I inherited this from my grandfather who said it belonged to his father who collected coins. It was in the envelop you see in the picture labeled "1817 Large Cent", so this "modification" was done a looooong time ago. I was hoping if someone can tell me what Newcomb variety it is if it's possible

Since I'm newer to the attribution of large cents, I'll let other chime in first (by the time I get it figured out you'll probably have an answer). It might be helpful if you got a closer pic of the date area, as a lot of the attribution is based on where the edge of the bust sits and the point of the curl over the 8 and where the tops of the 1 and 4 (or in your case what's left of the 4) are positioned. If you had a close clear pic of that area of the obverse, it would probably be really helpful.

BTW, I believe there are 38 active varieties for 1847.

To me it looks like the date position is either N-6 or N-28. I'm leaning toward 6 because I don't see any of the die cracks on the reverse which are almost always present on N-28. The pictures are nowhere near good enough though to get a definitive match.

I too am leaning toward N-6. My other option was N-12, but I think it is closer to N-6.

Thanks guys. You think probably G4 grade because of the deep scratch on the 4?

A little hard to tell for sure from the photos, but you're probably starting in the F15 to VF20 range. I don't have enough experience to tell you where things would net out to with the damage. I'll let those who are more experienced speak to that.

Technically it's probably VF details, but the altered date makes the grade almost irrelevant because it's not really collectible.
