Hi,

I want to figure out the value of my coin collection and was wondering how realistic the prices listed at this site are:
https://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices.php

If they are not realistic, please point me to what you use; preferrably free because in my opinion, this kind of information should be free.

"The last price on ebay" does not count in my world. Looking at previously sold items showed me there are either some wild swings, or a stable price with one outlier where someone got either a great deal, or got fleeced.

Regards,
me

The most realistic price for what you can BUY them for is go to the ebay "sold" listings, once you go to the "advanced" setting upper right for your search. The other way is to walk a few bourse offerings from larger coin shows. The thing is that you can't ever get a realistic "value" for your coins without looking for what someone has opened up his/her wallet and actually PAID someone for the coin. You can't sell a coin to a book or pamphlet ... you need somewhere where someone actually handed over money and ebay "sold" is the place to go.

BTW, don't go by the prices in CoinsandCanada .. very unrealistic

Coins are soft. Common date and common grade coins have little value beyond bullion value. Collectors are willing to bid up higher grade coins on ebay but even there they're selective. If you have silver Victorian coins in VF or better you have a good chance at reasonable prices upon sale.

Realistic values are never going to be found in any coin book, those are just starting points, ebay is your best bet, for seeing what a coin sells for ..type in the coin you are looking for, and click on ended listings, then scan the prices, to see some examples close to the one, you are looking for..

Coin books and price sheets don't buy coins, people buy coins..

I have seen coins booked at 200$ sell for 100$, and I've also seen 100$ coins sell for 150$. So check ebay and see what actual buyers are paying for coins,,

A seller can ask whatever they want for any said coin, the only important factor is, what someone actually paid for it..

The problem is that sold listings may not include the coins you care about in the right grade. So, if you are wondering what a realistic price to expect from a dealer is, look at maybe 25% of Coins and Canada. But it depends what you have. Common coins, like say circulated George VI coins, are worth more or less face or silver value depending on the metal. Top graded coins can be consigned to auction and may do much much better. If you have the typical inherited collection of not great grade 1900 & later coins, keep your expectations modest. Give a sense of what you have and we can be much more helpful.
