Odd situation here - asking price is way too high but, on the other hand, I think maybe this is graded a wee bit on the low side. But then, I have limited experience with the 50 cent coins. So I'm curious to know where people would put this? Sorry that the picture of the reverse is not great but the obverse is okay.

The wear on the hair and eyebrow tell me VF-20, but it may have sneaked by as a 30.

Hmm, interesting - I'm clearly clueless on the 50 cent. ICCS has it at VF-30 and if that's accurate then the price is too steep - the guy's asking $370. I was wondering if it was maybe more of a VF-35 in which case I would try and talk him down. At this grade I would need to talk him down by about $200!

@okiecoiner - the wear on the eyebrow is part of what confused me. The 1872 is obv #1, not obv #2 and I've been told that the eyebrow is one place in which these two portraits tend to wear differently. Specifically, the features of the eye in obv #1 are more shallow and sit higher on the engraving such that they wear quicker.
Curious for your thoughts on that?

I'd say VF-30 is about right.

VF-30 with low eye appeal and an old cleaning.

@Numis-Northerner - can you tell me what makes you think it's been cleaned? I can tell when something's been recently cleaned but, barring hairlines, older cleanings are harder to read...

I don't think the cleaning was with an abrasive, but looking at the patina and how uneven the color is on the obverse, this is imo not what an uncleaned coin looks like.
I should not as well that I don't think it is a details coin, but far from completely original

yep, vf-30 top of the grade,i don't like the difference in color from the obverse and reverse, but that could just be the lighting.

Looks like a VF-20 to me. ICCS has trouble with this series.

Its a VF30 with a few dings. Its way past VF20, but won't ever reach EF because of those dings.
Still, a nice coin!

Quote: think about the grading challenges for the series Yes, the challenge is for ICCS to actually get it right. The grader must have been blind to rate it that lw.

omg Tamarin, that has to be the worst grading I've seen in a while. I mean look at how pretty that coin is!
