can't tell if these exhibit original skin or if they've been dipped and retoned. Legit grading via TPG I assume (no details)?

You know I can't grade, but I Like the eye appeal on the 17 better.

I agree with 45 and 40, respectively.

Ok, I'm wondering if T-BOP and Coinfrog have slightly more conservative grading standards than others:

Check out XF-40 on page 7 here: https://www.PCGS.com/resources/guid...Dime-web.pdf
See XF-40 on this page: https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/how...dimes-768393

My impression was that at XF-40, the curl that juts out across from Liberty's nose is typically merged with her cheekbone, the wispy hairs below the wing are generally flat. On the revers, the horizontal bands at the top and bottom of the fasces (ignoring the often weak strike of central bands) are often merged together to some extent.

Can you tell me what criteria you use for discerning between XF and AU...not a formal reference, just what do you look for?

Thanks.

Interesting, so far 3 folks say the 17-D is higher grade.

Here's something to consider, take a look just at the red boxed area on both coins.

You have to look at other areas besides the red box, specifically the reverse, which typically where grade is assigned. I agree the 17 is a higher grade. I agree with T-BOP and coinfrog, 45 and 40, respectively.

Thanks for your thoughts merclover.

Yes, I certainly realize that grade isn't determined by features in the red box alone. That was one example.

In any event, after carefully examining a slew of PCGS and NGC XF40-AU53 graded Mercury dimes, I'm certain these two would be AU50 minimum any day of the week.

If you can find a PCGS or NGC merc at XF40 that looks as good as this 27-S, I'd love to see photos!

I respectfully disagree with this too. Grading Mercury dimes is certainly not limited to reverse features.

Bidding on these two coins ends momentarily. I considered them, but in the end decided not to bid. This seller's photos seem off to me. My instinct tells me these coins were dipped and retoned, these do not say "crusty original" to me.

1927-S:
352958180719

1917-D:
233484025325

The surfaces are just too uniform in color and in the AU range wear-wise, I'd expect more toning all around the edges of the devices.

Both look original. 17-D AU-50, 27-S AU-53.
