The Market Street Railway still exists and operates historic streetcars along Market Street in San Francisco as the F-Market Line. But the original independent company was taken over by the San Francisco Municipal Transportation company (MUNI) in 1944, so I would assume your token dates from before then.

listed in Atwood-Coffee, as white metal 1938 2 variations, if it is WM, brass plated it is 1939, all 3 are obsolete,Bad news very common, Listed in the latest addition first two tokens .25¢ (1938). second (1939) .35¢. You will find them generally over priced and listed as rare on the bay and other auction sites. they live in the LCS bargain bins.
