Hello everyone, I surprisingly won a well fought battle with some other bidders and picked up two amazing Augustus denarii. I did some research before putting in my final bid and found the catalog when these were last auctioned. Everything matched up and I put in my final bid.

They came in today still sealed in the original coin flip. First time I ever saw that. Sad truth is that I have to part with one of them to avoid serious repercussion from the wife.

I'm leaning towards the "Honos" denarius. It's going to be extremely difficult because I have never held such a perfect coin. In any case I've posted as promised.

WOW! beautiful coins. I bet you paid big money on them, but as nice as they are it's probably well worth. Too bad you have to part with one. If I had to make a choice I would keep the Honori.

Lovely coins!....

I agree with Ron and would keep the Honori.
But of course there is another option......Maybe keep them both and change the wife

Either way congratulations on 2 super pick ups....Paul

Hmmmmm Guys that may be a plan...... On second thought, I think I'll keep the wife.

No doubt, the Honori is the nicer of the two. But I mainly collect imperial and want a denarius with Octavian's portrait.

If I told you how much, you wouldn't believe me. I got them both for under what even one of them is worth.

Last auction 2017 the Honori brought in $1600 USD (similar grade)

The Augustus coin brought in $1400, however, that one was a better example than mine.

Don't really care how much they are worth, I just wanted an Augustus Denarius. So I might even sell both and buy a more common type - with enough left over for a small vacation with the family.

Sounds like you're positioned to get a good return on your investment. Congrats. So, do I understand correctly that both coins have been in the soft plastic flips ("...not intended for long term storage") since 1988? If so, I wonder if the damage on the RIC-I-296's obverse might be related to this(?).

Both are super examples. I wonder what folks here would do with the rust stain. Is it better to remove it or just leave it and not potentially also remove the earthen encrustations?

Bob, I can't believe these were actually sealed in this thing since 1988. But, no visible damage though, the listing in the catalog said that it had "Bankers's marks and deposits" so it was there already. The original lot also had another coin, RIC - 361 but that one was conveniently taken out of the holder.

Spence, I'd be afraid to remove that deposit, but man, I wish it weren't there.

Both portraits are superb. What an awful decision to have to make.

Great portrait coins are always nice to have
I don't believe a long term bath in distilled water could do any harm at all
As long as you don't pick away at it !
Use nothing more abrasive than gentle dabbing with a Qtip and no harm will be done

A quick pre-rinse in acetone won't hurt either

RVFVS, if I keep that one I will take your advice. Has that ever worked completely?

Well it doesn't really need to work completely although given enough time I'm sure it would
But a year or two should show some improvements
Patience (as always) has its rewards

And as mentioned
It shouldn't do any harm

I wanted to post a follow up, I did sell the Octavian as Augustus, 27 BC - 14 AD. M. Durmius. Denarius (Honos) on consignment (Bob thanks for the tip, I did go with FORVUM).

I did extraordinarily well, as it sold for even more than the examples that I researched. I am now well funded for more coinage. It was hard to part with it though, WOW what a beautiful coin.

Congrats, TC. Good for you. They (FORUM) will be - hopefully - listing a few more of my Parthians soon. (And an additional one will go through an upcoming CNG feature auction, CNG 115) This round was hard to part with - like your coin was for you. But, like you, I'm looking to reinvest in new acquisitions - in my case it'll be ancient weapons or pottery.

Glad you did well with selling the coin. I can never bring myself to part with any of my coins, it's not so much that I have very rare examples its just I know that I would regret it late. It's happened to me before.
