Hello

My dad has just came across a strange looking £2 coin. It is the act of union £2 coin. I have looked this coin up online and seen some are selling for a substantial amount of money because of a certain misprint on the edge of the coin.

I have checked the coin and it has the same misprint, it is also discoloured and not the same colour as your standard £2 coin. Please have a look at the photos I've attached. I can't seem to see any coins the same colour as this so I'm unsure what it is.

I was just wondering does anyone know if this coin would be worth any money or is it just another circulated £2 coin worth an extra £1.

Any help would be great please check out the photos.

Hello and

We would need better photos to evaluate this coin properly. Comparing it to an Act of Union 2 coin that I happen to have in my pocket at the moment, the edge inscription looks normal. What is the 'misprint'?

The colour definitely looks off but it's hard to tell from the photos. Someone could have plated it in a school science laboratory. Are there traces of the normal yellow/gold colour poking through on the edge or outer rim?

The writing around the edge of the coin 'UNITED INTO THE KINGDOM' is upside down

Quoting from an ebay listing.

Is that what the suspected error is here?

I don't know enough about coin minting processes, but if it's anything like in the United States with edge lettering, it's added after the strike, rendering Type A and B Sacagawea/Native American/Presidential Dollars, with Type A vs B being the direction the edge lettering is going, either up or down from a "defined" point of reference (either obverse up or down).

As far as the color, it would appear that it's not possible to be struck on an all cupro-nickel planchet. The outer nickel-brass ring is pierced, which I would interpret to mean that a smaller cupro-nickel center blank is created in relatively the same size as it is found in the two pound coins, and put in the outer ring.

Unless it's been struck on a fifty pence planchet...what does the coin weigh?

The lettering is added before the strike. I have a blank £2 with no reeding, which has the eedge inscription.

When the blanks are fed into the press it is random as to which way up they go, so the lettering can be either way up. It is a common ebay fraud for people to claim the lettering is upside down.
