Or there is a toning process going on. It seems like it would be a not so worn off if it were plating. It seems more like toning removal from what I can see.

Thank you guys for replying and the knowledge! Oh wow, Coop! I'd love to have any of those toned coins in your video, they're so beautiful! Love the tones. And good job on the video! Do you really think the one I have could turn into something like that? If so, what would be the best place to keep it? Would air exposure be good or bad? Also, I'm raising a 14 month old little girl and I'm kinda poor. Is it something I should sell or hold on to for her? I have a small collection I'm starting for her but I'd also like to be able to pay for good schooling if possible. So I've been trying to teach myself more about coins and bills to help a little. There's a ton to learn! Regardless though, would this be worth something now? Better to wait? Does it need to be graded? Reported to anyone or something like that? Sorry for all the questions and thanks again for all your patience and kindnesses. -Melissa

to CCF. It looks like environmental toning. Is it something I should sell or hold on to for her there is little premium for it as of now,if it continues to tone "nicely" there might be a small premium in the future. Coins and bills are not a good investment, just sayin' Does it need to be graded? No,a coin needs a minimum retail value of $150 to justify all costs involved in having it graded/slabbed. Reported to anyone or something like that? You already did. Put it in a 2x2 if you want to and it may or may not continue toning. Good luck with your "hobby" John1

Thank you Jon for taking the time to reply to my questions in such an enlightening way. Funny thing, considering I spend more time with coins than I do sleeping, I wouldn't consider it just a, "Hobby." Yet that was the only thing you put in quotations. Please don't quote me saying something I did not. Thank you! Have a most lovely day!

Quote: Good luck with your "hobby" I said it that way because it is a hobby, you and I will never get rich with coin collecting. You would be better off stacking precious metals for you and your daughters future. That's all I was trying to say,no offense intended. John1

Quote: Do you really think the one I have could turn into something like that? If so, what would be the best place to keep it? Would air exposure be good or bad? Depending on where you live, this can occur from just exposure to the air. Because of sulfur content on the eastern States, it can turn silver coins a bit more with a yellow color tone. Storage can affect coins. Puting a copper coin in white envelopes can turn coins very dark. (This happened years ago before the 2X2s were used for storage) Albums can turn coins different color if they are BU coins or have been dipped, picking up contamination from the holders. (best to keep BU coins in 2X2s or hard Flips. The soft flips that are very soft have issues with turning the colors an undesirable purple color. Best to stay away from them. Unless you remove the outer layer off the coin, they color remains lowering the coin to a cleaned/unnatural surface on them) Today's coins can be altered, but look so phoney they are not desirable like the old fashioned toned coins. These just look fake to me. (but were slabbed) The problem with your coin any toning present and areas where it is missing will keep toning, but will look like finger prints where it has already worn off. This one was in a album that turned the color. An old Whitman album coin. Some toned coins look nice, others to me that are not nice looking are ones I would never buy. So I prefer non toned coin, but some turn nicely. Nickels in the 1960's cellos can look unique: Some coins are heated and ruined for collectors. So knowing what is out there, helps you to see the faked ones from the real toned coins. It takes time to spot the differences.

Thanks Coop! Once again, full of useful information! I must ask though...what are 1960's cellos? Are they cellophanes made in the 60's or did you mean 1960's nickels that are in cellophane? I too much prefer the older, natural toning. I was watching your videos and absorbing information last night. I wish there were more written explanations but I probably need to read some books for that. Also, I live in the suburbs of New Orleans. I'm sure the sulfur is plentiful here! #128563; But does that make it good or bad for coin exposure to air? Thank you!! You're awesome! To John and other replier, I don't consider it a hobby. I consider it expanding my knowledge and possibly, with enough studying, maybe something that leads to a part time job or side career. I don't invest much money at all. I work with a cash register and have lots of access to neat coins and bills that are just floating around unloved. And who's to say I can't make money doing it? I'm sure your and my opinions vary greatly as far as the word, "rich" goes. I am already rich in the sense that I gave birth to the most loving, precious, living thing ever. A little money certainly wouldn't hurt that. #10084;#65039; Thank you guys! Have a great day! -Melissa

When looking on ebay for proof nickels, look for the ones still in the original mint cellos. The earlier 1960's are the best for finding toned and doubled dies for these. I also buy the cents every now and then. (Also in the cellos)
