I've now been a coin collector for slightly over a month as my grandfather passed his entire collection to me. None of which have been graded or any records kept as to why each coin has been saved. So I have no idea where to begin or what to look for, I'm just looking for visible errors. Many are not in great condition, and I'm looking for anything odd that stands out.

These two coins don't seem to be wear. Just a couple of letters or numbers are missing. Don't appear to be scratches, but the quarter does have a bit of bubbling and smearing to the 17. The Kennedy half dollar has a very weak t in trust, as well as part of the s. The Y in liberty and 4 in the number look slightly faded as well. Are these errors or damage? If it is errors, is it worthwhile to send in for grading or is this fairly common? I'm entirely new to all this so any assistance is appreciated.

The 50 cent piece contains 90% silver and maybe a slight " Greaser" with the T of TRUST (value is in silver melt @ 5 to 6 dollars)
The quarter is a nicer example of a grease(r) filled die.(value....check ebay sold items)
Would I pay to have them graded..NO NO NO
to CCF....have fun...good luck....

I agree, both coins show strike thru grease.

Thanks for the response. Is it mostly error coins in circulation that hold the value, or is it mostly the proof and uncirculated? There are just bags of coins and I imagine they all got some wear versus the ones packaged. Seems like there's something specific with each year to look for. Trying to narrow down where to begin.
